National Gallery of Victoria to Celebrate Designers Westwood and Kawakubo

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) prepares to host an unparalleled exhibit, uniting the avant-garde creations of Vivienne Westwood and Rei Kawakubo. This ambitious display at NGV International will feature more than 140 garments, representing the revolutionary impact these designers have had on the fashion world.

Curators Katie Somerville and Danielle Whitfield have chosen a thematic approach to highlight parallels in Westwood and Kawakubo's work. The exhibition will delve into themes of punk rebellion, body transformation, and historical influences, underscoring the designers' shared commitment to challenging the status quo.

Punk Provocation and Historical Inspirations

The late Vivienne Westwood is celebrated for her pivotal role in the 1970s punk movement, creating designs that seamlessly blended historical motifs with bold rebellion. Visitors can expect to see iconic pieces such as the tartan ballgown famously worn by Kate Moss, alongside the towering platform shoes that became a pop culture moment with Naomi Campbell's runway mishap.

Westwood's ability to infuse historical references into modern fashion will be a focal point of the exhibition, showcasing her skill in reshaping vintage styles into progressive statements.

Deconstruction and Conceptual Design

Rei Kawakubo, founder of Comme des Garçons, is known for her innovative approach to fashion design, consistently pushing the boundaries with her deconstructed and conceptual pieces. The exhibition will feature significant works, including the distinctive “lumps and bumps” collection and the unforgettable floral gown worn by Rihanna at the 2017 Met Gala.

Kawakubo's contribution to the exhibit is further enhanced by her personal donation of over 40 pieces, reflecting her ongoing influence and commitment to the art of fashion.

A Milestone in Fashion Exhibitions

NGV Director Tony Ellwood highlights the significance of featuring two female designers from diverse backgrounds. This exhibition marks the gallery’s first major fashion show dedicated entirely to women, spotlighting their bold creative spirits and cultural impact.

Building on NGV's history of successful dual-artist exhibitions, this event promises to offer a fresh perspective on fashion innovation and female empowerment in the industry.

Exhibition Details and Visitor Information

The Westwood | Kawakubo exhibition promises to be a major attraction, running from December 7 to April 19. Tickets for this groundbreaking fashion showcase will be accessible through the NGV website, offering an opportunity for visitors to explore the legacy of two of fashion's most daring designers.

In bringing together Westwood and Kawakubo's creations, NGV provides a platform for reflecting on the transformative power of fashion and the enduring influence of these visionary women.
